The Use of English at International Standard School

A. English in Use
The international standard school is one of school model that has certain and constructive goals in developing education and student’s skill. English as a tool of communication has the most important role in human life. It can be seen from many aspects such as; education, trade, tourism, entertainments, and sports. English is extremely needed by learners and teachers for the communication.
Jeremy Harmer (2001:2) says that English will remain a vital linguistic tool for many business people, academics, tourists, and citizen of the world who wish to communicate easily across nationalities for many years to come. In the learning and teaching activities, English can be used to facilitate the teachers and students in communicating and organizing the study process. As international language English is already used for communication among the people whose native languages are different from each other.
The awareness of how important English is to be taught and mastered, approximately in 1956 English formally had become one of the compulsory subjects which must be given from junior high school up to the university. In junior and senior high school levels which are projected to be international standard school, English really required in the process of studying activity. The program of SBI has demanded teachers and students to use English for their interaction in the classroom. The use of English in the teaching and learning process is highly necessary in order to meet the idealism of the International Standard School Program including non English subjects should use English in the process of teaching and learning in the class. Therefore the teachers should be more active to motivate students to use English as second language in classroom for communication, indeed English is international language that most of people use to communicate to get relationship with people around the world.
B. The Purposes of Using English at International Standard School
In t he curriculum of the International Standard School in Indonesia, it is stated that English is used as the medium of instruction in teaching English especially, mathematics, science and technology, and it is used to communicate outside the class (Depdiknas, 2007). From the statement, it can be highlighted that the International Standard Schools in Indonesia apply immersion as the method of using English as the medium of instruction. The government has done their best by organizing several training and providing English module for certain subject. The effort that has been done by the government still needs to be developed for the purpose that the teachers and the students can use English very well. In addition, developing English proficiency is not only a matter of transferring English academic terms into non English subjects, but it is also related to developing the communicative competence of using English for teacher and students. So, the training should be directed to expose teachers and students to comprehensible input (Classroom English) of EFL classroom. The purpose is to increase the awareness about the important of developing students’ English competence through the intensive learning of English in classroom setting to the students. The teachers should involve the students in an intensives communication in the classroom. To gain the communicative competence, the teacher can design the English classroom which will stimulate them to develop their language proficiency. Canale and Swain (1980) in Larsen-Freeman and H. Long (1991:39) state that there are four components of communicative competence: grammatical competence, sociolinguistic competence, discourse competence, and strategic competence. It is possible that the implementation of the method of using English as the medium of instruction in International Standard Schools differ from one school to another.
The implementation of the method can be modified by the school since all International Standard Schools have not acquired the International Standard School’s qualifications. Besides that, many students still have lack of English proficiency. That is why as one of the idealism of international standard school program, English is obliged to use in classroom for the transactional interaction. Lemke (1989) in Junaidy’s paper (2010) suggests that language, in classroom and elsewhere in social life, is not used just to communicate information. Two of its most important functions are (1) its use to perform specific kinds of action, and (2) its use in creating situation in which those actions take their meanings from the context we build around them. Referring what Lemke stated, the writer underlies that the teacher plays an important role in managing and organizing the classroom in order to encourage the effective classroom situation in study process.
C. The Role of Teachers in the Study Process
As with any other type of classroom procedure, teachers need to play a number of different roles during the speaking activities. However, three have particular relevance if we are trying to get students to speak fluently, in line those statements Harmer (2001:275-276) points out that there some roles:
- Prompter: students sometimes get lost, cannot think of what to say next, or in some other way lose the fluency we expect of them. However, we may be able to help them and the activity to progress by offering discrete suggestions, or forcing students out of role it will stop the sense of frustration that some students feel when they come to a ‘dead end’ of language or ideas.
- Participant; teacher should be good animators when asking students to produce language. However, in such circumstance they have to be careful that they do not participate too much, thus dominating the speaking and drawing all the attention to themselves
- Feedback provider; the vexed question of when and how to give feedback in speaking activities is answered by considering carefully the effect of possible different approaches. When students have completed and activity it is vital that we allow them to assess what they have done and that we tell them what, in our opinion, went well. We will respond to the content of the activity as well as the language used.
According to Brown (2007:251) as language practitioner states that a teacher has to play many roles, think of the possibilities; authority figure, leader, knower, director, manager, counselor, guide, and even such roles as friend, confidante, and parent.
The teachers have got important role in stimulating students to speak, although the teachers who teach non English subject such as math, science, and technology in International Standard School are not English teacher. Their ability to use English as media for teaching and learning is not good as well as English teachers. Moreover, the students need a good model for learning English language used to learn non English subject. For those reasons, the teachers should be carefully to use the language for teaching non English subject. In this case, the choice of English vocabulary should be relevant with the ability of the students. When there are so many unfamiliar vocabularies used in the process of teaching and learning, the students will get the difficulty to comprehend the material. Indeed the students will be more interested in learning non English subject when they get enough basic knowledge of English. So the use of language to create a situation on learning non English subject will run well if the teachers have enough knowledge of English language. In fact, in the process of teaching and learning, sometimes the teachers may use bilingual language. It means that in certain time the teacher needs to use their native language when they have difficulty to find out the target language (English) as a media for teaching and learning. The most important thing is that the teachers should not use bilingual language continuously. When they use the bilingual language too much, it will make them tend to use it especially using the native language for teaching and learning. This condition will also influence for the students to learn English as media for learning non English subject. The awareness of using English to create English classroom can be reached when both of teachers and students have a good commitment to establish the use of English for learning non English subject.
D. Conclusion and Suggestion
Referring to the above discussion, there are some points that the writer conclude, first the use of English language in classroom of international standard school and as language media for classroom interaction in the study process should be adjusted well, second the purpose of using English in classroom should be developed and implemented actively in order to produce the students whose well-behave and potential in facing global competition, third the teachers should be aware that they have got very important role to create significant improvement for their students.
Suggestion
This is our responsibility as the teacher to take care of students in learning, the teacher should be more active to make comfortable situation during classroom activity. It is better for teacher and students to make commitment or agreement to use English as second language in teaching and learning process.

How to Optimize the Learning English Foreign Language (EFL)

A. Introduction
English as international communication is widely used by the people around world as the main tool of communication. English as foreign language involves many areas of life, such as education, business, tourism, travel etc. English in Indonesia, just like the majority of countries in Asia, is treated as a subject for study rather than as a living language to be spoken in daily conversation. Therefore, the EFL classroom context is very different from a natural ESL learning environment. The lack of a surrounding community of English speakers outside the classroom increases the challenge for EFL teachers.
In this globalized society, especially in the Indonesian context, I have a pressing need to cultivate students’ autonomous language learning capacity. In these information rich times, students need to deal with a vast range of information that relates to the rapidly changing nature of the educational environment. Such is the rapid pace of change that the education students receive in school is no longer adequate for them in their work lives. Only by developing their capacity to become life-long learners who are constantly developing and improving themselves, can people adapt themselves to the increasing challenges of modern society. There are some categories which are focused in the following discussions: a new teaching strategy, objectives of learning using software presentation, learner autonomy, and internet based-learning.
B. Discussions
The continuous Development of high-tech today plays an important role to advantages of modern science and technology, the use of modern teaching techniques to provide students with diverse teaching content, has aroused the teaching process and teaching methods of the revolution. In physical Education and reasonable use of modern educational technologies, for optimizing the teaching contexts to stimulate student’s interest in learning, to mobilize the enthusiasm of students for outstanding teaching points, breaking the difficulty of teaching has a multiplier effect. Teaching foreign language might be bored for learners if the teachers are not creative in creating a new learning strategy. The learners are getting frustrated easily when the teachers always dominate classroom activity. Problems in teaching and learning English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) relates to both teachers and learners. This problem is partly affected by teaching methods. Teachers often provide insufficient opportunities for learners to practice English. To make the situation worse, both teachers and learners frequently use Indonesian language throughout English classes.
The problems that are stated above also have been appeared since I taught my students with pretty much spending teachers-centered strategy in my classroom activity whereas my students need a more interesting and effective activity in their learning. After I enroll myself at the English department of post graduate, I got a lot of significant things that can change my own way to teach my students in classroom. I learned many subjects that are very useful and helpful in enhancing my teaching strategy, one of the subjects that enables me to improve my way in teaching English as foreign language is Approaches to TEFL. In approaches to TEFL subject, I have already realized that there are so many strategies and techniques available that can be implemented in the classroom activity. The learning motivation and learners’ interest have been increased when I tried to apply different techniques and strategy in learning process for my students in the classroom. There are some approaches in learning language which are offered by the expert of language, such as: CALL (computer assisted language learning), communicative language teaching (CLT), Audio-Lingual method, direct method, etc.
I am really eager to encourage my students in learning English as foreign language, until I made the board notification to the students in classroom, language laboratory where students gather to learn it frequently, where its purposes of hanging this kind of notification are to make students realized and aware that English is the main language to use for communication, to motivate students to practice much their language, and to give some preferable ways of learning language in their own ways. (The notification is attached on appendixes).
Besides I attached the classroom with board notification, I as the teacher or learning conductor have to choose the right and more preferred technique for my students to learn the language in their classroom so that they will not get bored or frustrated in learning. I think the learning process in classroom will run effectively when the teachers and learners can work collaboratively in order to reach the learning objectives. That’s why in this paper I would really love to try to apply a new way to teach my students with computer assisted learning, it is commonly called software presentation.
I. A software presentation as a new strategy of teaching
In the 80s century, the teaching ways still use the conventional equipments such as blackboard, whiteboard, and chalks. In this paper I report on two uses of presentation software in my EFL courses: one as a tool for oral reporting and the other as a writing tool. In both cases students use the four language skills actively. They read source materials, discuss their ideas with their peers and teacher, write them and then share their writing with others. In both uses, students function as “doers and creators” and as such are motivated to invest time and energy into their tasks. Many presentation software applications are in use. In the Division of Foreign Languages at University of Serang Raya, I use Microsoft PowerPoint. PowerPoint is a computer tool for creating on-screen multimedia presentations or overhead transparencies. The program helps prepare an outline, slides, speaker’s notes and handouts for the audience. Even though this tool was developed for business presentations, I have found it to be very useful in the language classroom. Computer software such as power point is very useful and helpful for students to learn how to present visual materials (words, graphic and pictures) in a dynamic and interesting way. The software offers a more interesting option where we can mix text and visuals with video/audio tracks so that pictures can dissolve or fly onto and off the screen, and music, speech and film can be integrated into the presentation.
Why am I really eager to use power point software in learning? These are some of my reasons why I am interested in applying this technique in the classroom:
- Learning activity will be more attractive and innovative when the teachers and learners can work with computer as a modern media for language practice.
- Learners can get familiar and friendly to work with computer
- Learners will study grammar independently when they begin to practice language with an innovative way
- I as a teacher just oversee my learners progress during the learning activity in classroom
- I as a teacher should be able to motivate my students in learning in order to achieve the learning purposes.
- The power point software will train the learners to be active in organizing their own ideas to put in and making an out line from the given material or their preferred one.
II. The Objectives of using software presentation
When the learners can find their own way to practice, the learning process will be successful. I am using presentation software such as Microsoft PowerPoint generally needs little training in its use. Templates make it very easy to develop a good looking slide show. Media incorporation is straightforward as well; graphics, audio, and video can be added from pull-down menus. Some interactivity is possible with presentation software, depending on the product. It is possible in most, for example, to use transitions and sequential display to deliver material in question and answer format or to create simulations. I am electing to put presentations on the Web blog so that students can review the materials presented outside of class. There some considerable objectives of using this kind of techniques, as follow:
- The learners can get much positive things from their practice in designing their preferred material within slides of power point
- Learning can be fun when the learners can design much more beautiful slides of power point and convey the talks sequentially and systematically
- Teachers play an important role in organizing such this activity in order to meet the objectives of learning progress
- Learners not only can learn grammar in the classroom but also they can practice outside whenever they want through the Web blog as learning facilitation
- Even the result of their practice can be up loaded on the web. Learners will be able to rehearse their grammar practice through an interesting way.
- The teachers and learners will be able to work on this practice cooperatively while learners can get much outcome from presentation practice through power point.
III. Creating learners’ autonomy
The term of autonomy is ability to take charge of one’s own learning, in line with its term Holec describes (1981) main idea behind autonomy is that students should take responsibility for their own learning, rather than be dependent on the teachers. There are some characteristics in creating learners autonomy, such as:
- Learners’ capacity to learn for themselves is encouraged
- Learners encouraged to make decisions about what they learn
- Learners’ awareness of their own learning style is motivated
- Learners encouraged to develop their own learning strategy
- Teachers become less of an instructor and more of a facilitator
Dealing with the statements above, I observe the learning autonomy is the way how our students can learn independently and work in their own preferred way. There are some possible factors that can affect students’ autonomous on learning, such as:
- Teachers – Competences
- Creative
- Active
- Innovative
- Facility - SAC (Students Access Center)
- Library
- Laboratory
- Modern device capacity such as computer, video and tape recorder
- Motivation - Internal (students’ self confidence)
- External (teachers, facility, parents, and friends)
Autonomous learning should be achieved in classroom activity by teachers and learners in order to reach the learning objectives. Dealing with one of the points on facility, I consider one thing that can help the learners to learn independently and creatively through computer software. Therefore in my purposes I as a teacher expect to be able to achieve the goal of learning by promoting the students’ autonomy in learning through their own way to present their preferable materials within the software presentation and learners can work without depending on their teachers.
IV. Internet based learning
Computer technology has made a substantial contribution to Higher Education, during the present century, and Internet technology promises to become even more pervasive in the next one. The emphasis will probably continue to shift from Computer Based Learning (CBL), and its related methods, such as Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI), to Internet Based Learning (IBL), and its corresponding variants.
As I have already discussed in previous paragraph, the students will be more pleasure to learn the language with their own way or strategy in which they can practice with pretty much fun, because they can get much friendly to work with computer in which this media is portable. There are some considerable advantages to use computer software:
- It will facilitate my students to learn and read any material such as grammar with their own way.
- The learners will be independent learners when they find their strategy to learn
- It is an interesting way to enhance my students motivation and attention to learn grammar
- It gives much positive effects for my students to get as many as possible material they prefer to learn.

C. Conclusion
After discussing the literature above, finally I can conclude that a new strategy should be always developed by an active and creative teacher. Learners’ autonomy is very important part in learning activity so that they can learn independently or with their own way. Internet based learning is one of the way to learn the language for learners in which they can practice as much as they want without depending on their teachers, because the students will be able to learn it with pretty much interesting display on computer screen. I suggest for every student that learning can be much fun and interesting when we can find our way to learn anything.
